This is so well done Gina and beautifully written. Such great awareness and wonderful things to be thinking about. Jospeh Campbell talks about bringing things above the line from the unconscious to the conscious and I often work on this with my clients. We can’t change what’s below the line that we aren’t even aware of. We must have awareness in the conscious mind for change to take place. I love everything you shared in this article. It hit home and was such a gift to read 💜

Kara, this seriously made my day. I love how you put it — bringing things into the conscious mind. I’m not super familiar with Joseph Campbell but now I’m curious! Love hearing your reflections.

I will talk about Joseph Campbell anytime. In fact my book is inspired by his work on the hero’s journey ;) He says to imagine a circle with a line through the middle- anything below the line is in the subconscious- anything above the line is the conscious mind. As you so beautiful illustrated usually what’s below the line is running our lives and we aren’t even aware of it. Such a great article and thanks for bringing this awareness. It’s so needed. Campbells work is focused on bringing thought patterns above the line :)

Thanks, I needed that. I was 12 when I became aware that Mom was more than just my mother. She chose that year to give me a hardbound copy of Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Our family spent part of every August in an old cottage on top of a high dune overlooking Lake Michigan. There, I would hear Mom laugh more often, her brilliant blue eyes sparkling like the sun reflected off the water - both of us free from her parental responsibilities. Free to just BE. As I read Anne’s description of her search for self by the sea, I met my mother on those pages. Mom was revealing her own search to me

Jane, this is so beautifully shared. I haven’t read Gift from the Sea but now I definitely want to. And what a powerful memory—you must’ve been such a perceptive 12-year-old. I’m not even sure when I first realized that about my own mom… but now I’m thinking about it.
